Our Story

The BMW History Project began in 2018 as a collaboration between passionate automotive historians, former BMW engineers, and digital archivists with a shared mission: to create the most comprehensive documentation of BMW's automotive journey from its founding to its projected future in 2026.

What started as an informal research group among colleagues from Munich's automotive museums and universities quickly evolved into a dedicated team when we discovered significant gaps in the public historical record of BMW's technological evolution. Many prototype vehicles, experimental technologies, and design studies remained undocumented outside BMW's corporate archives.

With initial funding from the European Historical Vehicle Association and digital support from the Bavarian Digital Heritage Foundation, our team embarked on a mission to interview retired BMW engineers, digitize rare technical documents, and create accessible historical narratives about the company's automotive innovations across eleven decades.
